Election Season Is Coming - Advocate Smart, Stay Legal

Election time is a critical moment for change and for charities, it's a chance to amplify the voices and issues that matter most to our communities. But to have the most impact, we also need to stay on the right side of the law.

🔍 If you’re a registered charity in Aotearoa, you can advocate—but only in ways that align with your charitable purpose. That means you can speak out on issues like housing, climate, education, or Māori representation, but you can’t support or oppose political parties or candidates.

✅ What you can do:

  • Raise awareness on kaupapa that reflect your mission.

  • Host non-partisan candidate events.

  • Promote voting and democratic participation.

  • Engage with policy—but not party politics.

🚫 What you can’t do:

  • Endorse candidates or parties.

  • Use charity resources for political campaigning.

  • Post or promote partisan messaging.

We've created more detailed guidelines see link below.

Let’s be bold with our advocacy—and smart about how we do it. Protect your mahi. Protect your charitable status. And keep our democracy strong.
