Creating Safe Spaces and Inclusive Futures

At the Len Reynolds Trust, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for all communities, including rainbow whānau. We believe that every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued.

Our focus on supporting rainbow communities is rooted in our core values of equity, manaakitanga, and social cohesion. From advocating for safer spaces to creating funding opportunities, we are actively working to empower and uplift the voices of rainbow communities across Waikato and beyond.

A Gathering of Minds and Hearts

The recent hui at Rainbow Hub Waikato marked a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to ensure safety and support for rainbow communities. With Pride 2025 on the horizon, community leaders, funders, service providers, and police representatives engaged in meaningful discussions about event security, addressing wellbeing concerns, and implementing proactive strategies to create safer spaces for all participants.

This collaborative approach reflects the core values that drive the Len Reynolds Trust's commitment to rainbow communities: equity, manaakitanga, and social cohesion. By bringing diverse stakeholders to the table, the hui fostered a shared understanding of challenges and opportunities, strengthening the foundation for effective action.

The Rainbow Safety Fund: From Vision to Reality

Perhaps the most tangible outcome of these efforts is the recently established Rainbow Safety Fund. Launched on 20 March 2025, this initiative represents a direct response to safety concerns within Hamilton's rainbow community. The fund has already approved its first application from Hamilton Pride, providing crucial support for security and safety measures.

"The Rainbow Safety Fund isn't just about addressing immediate needs," explains Melissa Gibson, CEO of the Len Reynolds Trust. "It's about creating sustainable systems of support that acknowledge the unique challenges faced by rainbow whānau."

Beyond its local impact, the fund contributes to broader conversations about funding equity through the Rainbow Funding Rōpū, helping to shape national approaches to supporting rainbow communities.

Looking Forward: A Vision of Inclusion

As these initiatives unfold, they demonstrate what's possible when communities come together with shared purpose. Through collaborative efforts, targeted support, meaningful partnerships, and genuine commitment to inclusion we can create tangible benefits for rainbow whānau.
